Five ways to reduce your household energy use.

Here’s how you can save money – and the environment – by reducing your household energy use and carbon footprint.

When winter hits, staying warm and heating our homes is something we all like to do. Whether we have ducted heating, split systems or wood fires—keeping our homes and our families warm is of utmost importance during these chilly months. But heating our homes can be an expensive exercise, especially if we don’t have good insulation or the resources to ensure we are being as energy efficient as possible. So how do we keep your home energy costs down?

While there are many options for enhancing the warmth of your home, such as double-glazed windows and insulation, the perfect solution can be as simple as investing in some quality window furnishings. Plus, they are an attractive addition and add also value to your home. But how do these additions help to keep your energy costs down?

Here’s how window coverings can help you save money

Energy Efficiency

One of the primary benefits of window coverings is their ability to improve energy efficiency. In Australia, it is widely reported that up to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost, and up to 87% of its heat gained, through windows. It’s a scary thought, isn’t it? So unless you already have double glazing or some kind of insulating film on your windows, there will likely be a fair bit of heat transfer taking place through the glass. What this means is that plenty of the warmth within your home will be lost as it comes into contact with the chill of the outside via your windows.
Well-insulated window coverings, such as thermal or blockout curtainsdouble curtains, thermal blinds, blockout blinds or double roller blinds, can help prevent heat loss during winter, and heat gain during summer. By effectively controlling the transfer of heat through your windows, these coverings can reduce the load on your heating and cooling systems. Consequently, you can save on your energy bills by relying less on artificial heating or cooling. But remember, the efficacy of your window coverings will be gauged by how well they fit your windows. Custom-made window coverings will give you the best results, and we can help you with that. See our online how-to-measure guides and tips below for more information.

Sunlight Control

Window coverings also allow you to control the amount of sunlight entering your home. Direct sunlight can increase the temperature inside, which is ideal in the winter months as your heaters won’t have to work as hard to heat your home. By using coverings like blinds, shades, or curtains, you can adjust the amount of sunlight entering your rooms. This can prevent overheating in summer, and reduce the need for excessive heating in winter, ultimately saving on your energy costs.

Privacy and Security

Window coverings offer privacy by reducing the view from the outside in. This can eliminate the need for exterior window treatments or privacy films, saving you money. Additionally, coverings such as roller blinds or plantation shutters can act as an additional layer of security by preventing potential intruders from peering into your home and deterring them from attempting a break-in.

Protection for Furnishings

During the warmer months, UV rays from sunlight can cause fading and damage to your furniture, carpets, and other interior decor. Window coverings like roller blinds, plantation shutters or curtains with UV-blocking capabilities can help protect your furnishings from harmful rays, thereby extending their lifespan. By reducing the need for premature replacements or repairs, you can save money in the long run.

Insulation and Noise Reduction

Some window coverings, such as heavy drapes or layered curtains, can provide additional insulation from the cold and help dampen external noises. Improved insulation helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature, reducing the workload on your heating systems and lowering energy expenses. Moreover, reducing noise infiltration can enhance your comfort, making it unnecessary to invest in soundproofing solutions.

Remember, choosing the right window coverings and utilising them effectively based on your climate and preferences can maximise their cost-saving benefits. So what options can iSeekBlinds offer you?

Layering curtains for warmth retention

An option for customers who are looking for added insulation is to layer their window furnishings in their homes. For example, you may already have sheer curtains, but you might consider adding a blockout curtain or blockout roller blind for extra insulation. Doubling up on your window furnishings is great for insulation, as even a thin layer of fabric can enhance the insulating capacity within your home.

  • Our Double curtains allow you to enjoy the daytime sunshine with your sheer curtains and then trap in the heat of the day with blackout curtains which can be pulled shut at night.
  • You can also layer curtains with roller blinds, to give you the ultimate in practicality, flexibility and insulation benefits. This is a favourite with iSeekBlinds customers! And the combination is up to you. You can choose blockout roller blinds with sheer curtains, or sunscreen roller blinds with blockout curtains. Both are effective and will really help you keep your energy costs down.

Sometimes trying to match the perfect blind and curtain fabric can be tricky. So, to make things easier, we have developed fabric combinations that complement each other.  Not only do they provide you with a beautiful layered window covering solution, but one that is functional and affordable too.

  • Bali Blends range: This best-seller consists of coordinating thermal blockout roller blind and sheer curtain fabrics in a variety of colours, suitable for any interior style or space.
  • Linesque range: An iSeekBlinds customer favourite, Linesque offers a unique linen-look and soft, textural finish on both the blockout roller blind and sheer curtain range.

Roller Blinds and Curtains: A collaboration of functionality and style.

Feeling like your home needs a refresh? At this time of year, many of us start thinking about how we can make our spaces that little bit nicer (gosh, we are constantly thinking about that!) but we often overlook the effect that our window coverings have on the look and feel of a room.

Choosing the right treatment for your windows can make a world of difference. Not only do they change the visual appearance, but they can affect the way you live in the space as well.

Curtains and blinds are super popular right now, and the good news is that done right – they are a match made in heaven! Combining curtains and roller blinds offers you the ultimate in flexibility. Not only does it allow you to control light levels with ease, but they will also provide you the privacy and insulation benefits you require during the day and night.

So, think this is something you’d like for your home? Read on for our tips and tricks, and you too can master this perfect combination like a boss!

1.  Identify the needs of the space

This is the common sense first-step as it will guide you in your decorating choices. For example – bedrooms need full blockout for a great sleep, especially important if you have a shift-worker in the house. Outside mounting your blockout roller blind and back rolling the fabric will enable the blind to sit nice and close to the architrave, eliminating any light gaps and offering the best blockout and room darkening result. Living rooms can be a little more flexible with light levels, so roller blinds can be inside mounted if you have the depth in your window reveals, giving you a more streamlined and subtle finish.

2.  Identify what combination will work best for you

Will a blockout curtain and sunscreen roller blind be best? Or a blockout roller blind behind a sheer curtain? This can be a hard choice as both have practical and aesthetic benefits. Blockout curtains give you excellent light block – which is super handy if you have a shift-worker in the house who needs to sleep during the day – and installing a sunscreen blind behind the curtain will offer daytime privacy when the curtains are open. Conversely, if you can’t go past the beauty of sheer curtains, installing a blockout roller blind behind them will give you the privacy you need at night time.

3.  Maximise your coverage

Where and how you mount your curtains and blinds can really change the perception of the scale of your windows. If you have standard or low ceilings, you can elongate the height of the space by opting for a ceiling mount on your curtains and running the track past the edge of your architraves too. This will make your windows look much larger than they actually are.  Going high and wide really will make a huge difference, we promise!

4.  Think about your fabrics

There are a few things to consider here in addition to the basic “Which colour?” question. Start with the roller blind and the room it’s going in.

  • Do you need a full blockout fabric (think required light levels) or can you get away with a light-filter fabric instead?
  • Is ease of cleaning your roller blinds a consideration? Think about this especially if there’s a chance of little handprints on the blind each day.
  • And what about the orientation of the room in relation to the sun. Are you facing north or west, and copping a whole lot of heat during summer? Light colours will reflect the light and heat, keeping a room cooler than darker colours which absorb the heat. But these absorption features of darker colours make a blind easier to look through, and are not as harsh on the eye as lighter colours which reflect the light.

Phew – confused yet?!  Once you’ve covered these queries and have formed some idea of what you need from a fabric, then consider the look you want to achieve and the colours that will work with your interior.

5.  Choose your fabrics

We suggest choosing a roller blind fabric that is a tonal-match or neutral colour when placing them behind a sheer curtain. Considering the sheer is at the front and is the star in the “good-looks department”, you don’t want to detract from that by installing a roller behind it that is in total contrast or distracts you from its beauty. Choosing a neutral blind fabric that blends with your walls or with the curtain itself will give you a stunning result. When it comes to the sheer curtain fabric – our Bali range has some gorgeous colours to choose from and their linen appearance works with many different decorative styles looks amazing in any interior.

To make it really easy for you – we have some coordinated ranges of sheer curtain and blockout roller blind fabrics that will make your choices much easier! Take a look at the Bali and Linesque ranges on our website now.

6.  Consider your blind operation

Blockout and light-filter roller blinds are normally open during the day and closed at night. Blockout curtains are the same, whereas a sheer curtain is normally closed all the time. So the ability to easily open the rollers is of vital importance. Will you be happy reaching behind the curtain to operate your chain-drive blind? Or do you want to upgrade to luxury by opting for our motorised roller blinds? Imagine laying in bed or on the couch, and with a simple “Hey Siri, open the blinds”, up go the your rollers! Hmmm, very enticing isn’t it?

7.  Choose the right track for your curtain

If you’re going for scale and size – ceiling-mount options are the way to go. Choose the profile that suits your needs best and consider the colour as well – our tracks are available in white, black and anodised silver. White will blend in with most ceilings, providing a super subtle look. Black will provide a great contrast, and is the perfect choice for those with black framed windows or other black accents in the room. The simple tip here is to decide whether you want the track to blend in or stand-out. You can also choose our motorised curtains for the ultimate in luxury.

So all in all – there a few things to keep in mind when selecting the right combination for your windows. The choices you make can make or break a room, so making sure you consider all aspects carefully is essential to achieving a great result, and one you’ll be super proud of for years to come.

Whether you choose blinds or plantation shutters, bathroom window coverings need careful consideration.

Bathroom and laundry windows don’t have to be bare or boring!  These hard-working spaces are all about functionality, and the window coverings should be practical and easy to look after as well. But whatever window treatment you choose, it will need to stand up to humidity and dampness.

Our top choices for laundry and bathroom windows would have to be PVC Plantation Shutters and Roller Blinds.  Let’s explore both of these further, and see what will work best in your home.

Bathroom Roller Blinds

Roller blinds in a bathroom provide privacy, control the amount of light and also look great.  With many colours and designs to choose between, you can decorate your laundry and bathroom windows to suit your taste and style.

We recommend choosing mould and mildew-resistant fabrics for these wet areas to minimise the risk of your blinds deteriorating from exposure to humidity. Visit our fabrics page to view the mould-resistant options within our ranges.

For homes where privacy isn’t a huge requirement, you could consider a sunscreen blind that allows you to retain your view. Alternatively, light filter blinds are the perfect in-between solution – gently diffusing the light yet offering privacy too.

In the image below, our customer opted for a blockout roller blind in a colour that coordinates with his bathroom tiles and fixtures.

Bathroom Plantation Shutters

Plantation Shutters are a customer favourite for bathrooms and other wet areas such as the laundry, and our PVC Shutters are resistant to moisture, making them the ideal solution for bathrooms and laundries. Providing privacy while still letting in the light, our easy-to-install plantation shutters are a practical and stylish choice.

Resistant to moisture and humidity, they are perfect for wet areas such as bathroomskitchens and laundries as well as warmer, tropical climates. Our PVC shutters have an aluminium core within each blade to provide additional strength and durability, ensuring they won’t warp or crack. And with a 5-year warranty, you can’t go wrong.

Are you worried about losing your view? Don’t be. Our clearview shutter design enables maximum visibility between the blades , so you’ll retain the optimal view from your window. With split-tilt flexibility, you can open the upper section to let in light, keeping the lower shutters closed for privacy. You’ll need to specify this when designing and ordering your plantation shutters on our website.

Curtains for bathrooms

Many modern bathroom windows have frosted glass, making a window treatment a personal choice rather than a necessity. If you’re looking to improve your bathroom or ensuite windows, you may want to keep your bedroom curtain style flowing through the interior. You may have seen this around as a popular new option, especially in larger bathrooms or those that are open to the bedroom. They can also be used in conjunction with roller blinds or plantation shutters to soften the look.

Curtains should only be used in bathrooms that have excellent ventilation, so that mould or mildew growth on the fabric won’t become an issue. Aim to keep curtains away from wet areas too, as in this photo below. Our customer installed them on a window near the doorway, well away from the functional areas of the bathroom.

Ensure seamless cover from your roller blinds with these handy tips

Not a fan of light peeking through the edges of your roller blinds? You’re not alone!

A key concern that many of our customers have is whether their blinds are going to provide the kind of sun protection and light elimination they are craving. Blinds are not like curtains, in that your blinds only cover the specific rectangle they are cut to – so there is a risk that you may have some light spilling around the sides of your blinds.

We have been helping our customers measure, order, and install their blackout blinds in Melbourne, Victoria, and across Australia for long enough to have a few tricks up our sleeve about how to keep the sun and light out. Read on for tips and tricks to keep the light from coming in around the sides of your blinds for a better night’s sleep. Then, if you would like to DIY your own blinds, fit for your specific need, then take a look at our range.

Tip #1: Install curtains on the sides of your blinds.

A simple but effective way to keep the sunlight from coming in the side of your blinds is to place a set of blockout curtains over the top of your blinds. This handy combination not only works a treat to keep the sunlight from streaming through the sides of your blinds but helps with insulation, and looks great too!

Installing curtains to cover the side of your blinds is as simple as taking a look at our curtain fabrics and learning how to measure. If you have specific questions, we can advise you on your options and figure out what will work best for your home. Just contact us for help.

Tip #2: Outside-mount your blackout blinds

Blackout blinds are by their very nature designed to keep maximum light out. When we have customers who want to keep the maximum amount of light out of their homes, we recommend outside-mounted blackout blinds for the ultimate in light reduction.

Outside-mounting means the blind is installed across the front of the window, rather than inside the recess. This effectively prevents light gaps at the edges of your blind. Our blinds are completely customisable by you, so you have ultimate control over how they will look and work. For example, do you want single or double roller blackout blinds? Do you want to operate your blinds with a chain drive or – for the ultimate in luxury – motorised blinds?

Whatever configuration you end up opting for, outside-mounted roller blinds are a highly effective way to stop light from coming through the side of the blinds. Our team is available for extra guidance, or you can see our how-to guides here.

Tip #3: Add light blocker strips to your windows

A simple ‘hack’ that stops light from coming in the side of your roller blinds is to install light blocker strips on your windows.

These simple strips are especially handy if you have inside-mounted roller blinds as they sit on the sides of your windows and block the light gaps. If you have installed your blinds and found that you have a slight gap letting light in, a light blocker strip may be the simple answer you are looking for. You can usually find these in hardware stores or online.

Your guide to hanging temporary curtains and blinds in a rental property.

Rentals can often feel impersonal and cold, with few options for making the apartment or house feel like home while you are living there. But renting shouldn’t mean sacrificing privacy, or having a darkened room to sleep in. Whether it’s a short term stay or a long term rental, you want to feel comfortable in your space.

One way you can add ambience to a rental property is by installing temporary curtains or blinds. With no drilling required, you can remove them and take them with you when you move on without leaving a trace. Or, if your landlord permits you to make improvements in your rental, you can help the owner to save costs with DIY curtains and roller blinds from iSeekBlinds.

Here are a few ideas you can use to hang curtains or blinds and make any rental feel more like home.

Hang temporary blinds

Temporary blinds provide a simple solution for a bare window. Blinds offer a modern, contemporary look, and unlike standard blinds, you can take these down when you move.

Temporary blinds are inexpensive, easy to install and often made from high-quality paper that you can install yourself. They are also an ideal solution to cover your windows when waiting for your custom-made Curtains, Blinds or Plantation Shutters too!

Black temporary blinds will provide privacy and room darkening, making them ideal for bedrooms; and white temporary blinds will filter the light whilst providing daytime privacy.

You won’t need tools to install them. All you need to do is cut the blinds to size and mount them to your window, avoiding any water-based paint surfaces. For large windows, two blinds can overlap to provide full coverage.

When you no longer need the blinds, you can recycle them or pack them up and take them to your next property.

Use a tension rod

A tension rod means you can hang curtains without worrying about drilling into the wall. A tension rod sits inside the window architrave or between two walls and relies on tension from a spring inside the rod to hold it in place.

Tension rods are a subtle and elegant way to complete the look of your room with sheer curtains that look natural. There’s the option to place the curtain rod high in the window for maximum coverage.

Placing a tension rod lower in the window gives a ‘country curtain’ style coverage, perfect for letting natural light into the room whilst still providing privacy in the kitchen or bathroom.

The limitation with a tension rod is that it can’t usually support heavier drapes. You can still hang blackout curtains if you select lighter fabrics with a total curtain weight under 3kg.

Suspend curtains from Command hooks

Command hooks are another removable option for hanging curtains. These hooks come in different colours and weight ratings, so you can choose a pair of hooks that suit the curtains.

Once the hooks are mounted, you can mount tab top or eyelet curtains on a piece of dowel suspended between the hooks or invest in a curtain rod.

When choosing the curtain rod, remember to be mindful of the weight. A lighter rod will be less likely to tip the total weight over the capacity of the hooks.

Use a twist-and-fit curtain rod

A twist-and-fit curtain rod is like a tension rod, but it looks like a regular curtain rail. Twist and fit rods sit inside the window architrave, and you won’t need any tools to install them.

The advantage of twist-and-fit curtain rods is the variety of options. You can select the colour, size and finish to achieve a homey, complete look.

High-end twist-and-fit curtain rods can also hold heavier curtains, allowing you to hang drapes or blackout curtains safely without using a drill.

Tips for hanging curtains in a rental property

  • Choose lightweight curtain fabrics:
Most temporary methods to hang curtains can’t support the weight of heavy drapes or thick fabrics. You are limited to lighter curtain materials that fall under the maximum weight your temporary curtain rod or rail can support.
  • Be prepared to leave curtains long:
When you move, you may want to re-use the same curtains in your next property. After all, your curtains match the rest of your decor, so it’s nice to keep it all together. Sometimes this will mean leaving curtains long to retain their original size. A curtain that drapes onto the floor provides opulence and you can clean curtains regularly to reduce any dust build-up. It also future-proofs you if your next rental has higher windows.
  • Be careful with water-based paint:
Command hooks and other removable wall hangings don’t always come off as seamlessly as you would like, especially if the paint is water-based or a low-quality specification. Chipped paint can mean a deduction from your security bond. Before hanging temporary hooks, it might pay to get a paint sample to match the walls. That way, if any paint does come off when you remove the sticky pad behind the hook, you can touch it up.

Now you have options for making a rental your own and getting privacy. Which window treatment are you going to use?

How to choose between living room blinds, curtains and shutters.

A living room is a place we go to connect, relax, and unwind. It’s often the first room we consider when redecorating!  If you’ve just moved into a new place or you’re ready to update your living room, selecting the right window treatment will set the room’s tone.

You might choose to allow plenty of natural light to enter during the day, filtered by elegant sheer curtains or light-filtering blinds. In the evening, privacy is paramount. Stay cosy inside by closing heavier curtains or blinds.

Stylish living room blinds.

Blinds are a practical and modern choice for busy living spaces. Easy to maintain and clean, blinds tend to blend in and complement other living room decor.

Double roller blinds allow you to let in just the right amount of light at any time of day, as you can choose between blockout and sunscreen or light-filtering blinds, depending on your needs. With this flexibility, you can’t go wrong.

If you’re looking to add modern luxury to your living room, there’s also the option to upgrade to motorised blinds.

Our custom-made, linked roller blinds allow the flexibility to use your windows and sliding doors easily while still maintaining maximum privacy and comfort inside.

Cosy curtains for all-day comfort.

Transform your living room with our custom-made blockout and sheer curtains. With no compromise on quality, our living room curtains are made with only the highest quality fabrics.

The best place to start when selecting curtains is to decide what you need them to achieve. While curtains serve to add texture and style to any room, they also need to be practical! For example, in living areas, you may want to achieve privacy during the days and evenings. Lighter fabrics and sheer curtains are practical, giving you the flexibility to design the room in your style. Install roller blinds behind them to give you nighttime privacy and insulation during summer and winter.

Blockout curtains will provide excellent protection against the winter cold and harsh summer sun and have always been a popular option for living room windows.

To help with the DIY process, I have prepared an extensive how-to video library. You’ll find information on different fabrics, and videos on how to measure your windows as well as how to install your new living room curtains. Find them on our website here.

Tip: We highly recommend ordering free fabric samples to see the fabric before placing your order online. This will give you confidence in your colour and texture selection.

Statement living room plantation shutters.

A fantastic option for any home, plantation shutters are a classic window treatment that’s super-easy to maintain. Shutters bring architectural structure and stunning style to your space. Our shutters are designed in clear-view style, so you have the best possible view from your window when the blades are open.

Our website has plenty of handy videos and instructions to help you DIY assemble and install your shutters, allowing you to enjoy these premium products at an affordable price.

Choose the panel layout that will complement your window and place your order online. Your living room shutters are custom made to your exact specifications in just a few weeks.

How to reuse and recycle old roller blinds.

Roller blinds are a household item that you use each day to darken rooms, add privacy or filter the sunlight. Exposed constantly to the harsh Australian sunlight, it’s only natural that roller blinds will slowly deteriorate over a long period of time, particularly if they are not of good quality.

Are your old roller blinds due for a refresh? We have high-quality, durable custom roller blinds that you can DIY install and save money in the process.

When you replace your old roller blinds with a newer, more effective window treatment, your old roller blinds may not need to go to hard rubbish. There are lots of ways you can up-cycle or recycle unwanted roller blinds.

Here are some ways you can give old roller blinds a second life.

1. Give away blinds that are in good condition

If your old roller blinds are still useable and you are upgrading to achieve a particular look, someone else may benefit from your unwanted blinds.

Research nearby charitable organisations, op shops or housing providers to find out where old binds are accepted. A trip to the op shop could also be an opportunity to clear out any other items you aren’t using.

You may already know someone who could use the blinds. Be sure to remove the old blinds and transport them carefully to the new location.

2. Start a craft project

Roller blinds come in a variety of versatile fabrics that are suitable for other purposes. Depending on the fabric type, you can use old roller blind fabric in many craft applications. The only limit is your imagination!

If you aren’t crafty yourself, the local primary school may be able to use your old roller blinds for a class project. Roller blind fabric is sturdy, making it perfect as an art canvas, cut up to make decorative bookmarks, or to use in other designs.

3. Make a mat from old roller blinds

One practical and creative use for roller blind fabric is to make it into a durable rag rug for indoors or outdoors. Roller blinds are often neutral colours, so the rug or mat you make will complement any decor.

Here’s a quick guide to the steps:

  • Remove the fabric from the rods and opening mechanisms.
  • Cut fabric into strips.
  • Sew the strips together to create several long strips of fabric. You can roll this into a ball to store it.
  • Braid the joined strips of fabric together.
  • Sew the braid into a circle or another shape to suit your needs!

Rather than braiding the fabric, you could try weaving it instead. Weaving may be easier if the material is quite stiff, and the final result will look great as a doormat. You might you may need a double layer for a finished mat.

Weaving or braiding a mat or rug is just one option for using old roller blind fabric. It’s a much better solution than putting the blinds into hard waste and a rewarding project too.

4. Create labels for storage

For items stored in the shed, such as gardening tools, DIY tools or ski gear packed in boxes, paper labels may not last. It can be frustrating to look into every single box to find what you need.

For storage in a carport or shed, using roller blind fabric for the labels can ensure your items are easy to find, even after time has passed. Roller blind fabrics are generally durable, making them suitable for use in both outdoor and indoor applications.

The durable polyester and acrylic fabric of your old roller blinds is ideal for labelling storage boxes. With labels in place, you can find what you need right away.

5. Mark plants in the garden

While it can be fun to try to remember what you’ve planted in the garden, sometimes you want to know which plants are where. Old roller blind material can be cut up and used to label your plants or seeds.

You’ll need a permanent marker to write the name of each plant on the strip and some small stakes to attach the material to as well.

6. Make reusable shopping bags

Do you find that you never have enough bags at the supermarket? Old roller blinds can be shaped into handy carry bags and decorated to suit your style.

Cut the fabric to the correct size and shape that will form the bag. You could use a shopping bag you already have as a guide.

To add a pop of colour, you might want to cover the roller blind with fabric. You might cut a piece of fabric to size and sew the edges with a hem that creates a neat finish.

Then sew the sides of the bag into the shape you want, and don’t forget to add handles!

Combining sheer curtains and roller blinds is easy with our range of Bali fabric combinations.

Sheer curtains and roller blinds are a match made in heaven and will provide you with the ultimate in flexibility. Not only does this combination allow you to control light levels with ease, but it also provides you the privacy and insulation benefits you require during the day and night.

But sometimes trying to match the perfect blind and sheer curtain fabric can be tricky. So, to make things easier, we’ve introduced our Bali blends range of coordinated fabrics.  We’ve taken the guesswork out of choosing your roller blind and sheer curtain fabrics by developing combinations that complement each other.  Not only will they provide you with a beautiful window covering solution, but one that is functional and affordable too.

Follow our tips below to make the most out of combining sheer curtains with roller blinds in your home using our Bali blends range.

Install a blockout roller blind

Identifying the needs of the space is the common sense first-step as it will guide you in your decorating choices. For example:

  • Bedrooms need full light blockout for a great sleep (especially important if you have a shift-worker in the house) so installing a blockout roller blind is a great option. Outside mounting your blockout roller blind and back-rolling the fabric will enable the blind to sit nice and close to the architrave, eliminating any light gaps and offering the best blockout and room darkening result. • Living rooms can be a little more flexible with light levels, so roller blinds can be inside mounted if you have the depth in your window reveals, giving you a more streamlined and subtle finish.

Sheer curtains can then be installed over the top of both inside and outside-mounted roller blinds.

Go high and wide with your sheer curtains

Where and how you mount your sheer curtains can really change the perception of the scale of your windows and your room. If you have standard or low ceilings, elongate the height of the space by opting for a ceiling mount on your curtains and running the track past the edge of your architraves by at least 100mm on each side. Better still, if you can run your sheer curtains across the length of the wall you’ll achieve a stunning, designer-style finish that will make a real difference to your space. This will make your windows look larger than they are.

Think about your fabrics

There are a few things to think about in addition to the basic “Which colour?” question. Privacy, insulation properties and ease of cleaning should all be considered when making your choices. Let’s break it down.

Blockout roller blind fabric considerations

A full blockout fabric is great for light control and insulation all year round, and our Bali Thermal blockout is a stand-out choice. Its thermal properties will help keep your rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter, and it’s also easy to maintain and clean, making it ideal for use in any room or any climate.

Bali Thermal blockout blind fabric is PVC, VOC and Lead-free as well as being fade resistant and fire retardant, making it a perfect choice and safe for your family too.

Sheer Curtain fabrics

Sheer curtain fabrics are not just decorative. They provide daytime privacy, filter the light entering your room and help insulate against heat and cold too.

Our Bali sheer curtain is a beautiful, lightweight fabric. It is effortlessly elegant and its linen-like texture will add a gentle, soft floatiness to any room. Colour fade resistant and flame retardant, it’s a perfect option for your home.

The importance of colour choice

Colour choice is not just about what you like or what matches your room’s furnishings. Believe it or not, colour also plays a big part in the insulation stakes.

Consider the orientation of the room in relation to the sun. Are you facing north or west, and copping a whole lot of heat during summer? Light colours will reflect the light and heat, keeping a room cooler than darker colours will, as darker colours will absorb the heat. This is especially relevant for blockout roller blinds.

Choosing your colour

When placing a roller blind behind a sheer curtain, you’ll achieve the best outcome if your roller blind fabric is a tonal match. The sheer curtain should be the star of the show, so installing a complementary roller behind it means it will stand out and there will be nothing to distract you from its beauty.

And that’s exactly what our Bali blends range offers you! The perfect combinations are already decided to make your choice easy. All you need to do is choose which colour works best for you and your interior (the colour names are the same in both the blind and the sheer curtain to make it really easy!).

  • Whites: Snow, Chalk and Pearl
  • Warm neutrals: Blush, Driftwood and Smoke
  • Greys: Cloud, Ash and Thunder
  • Dark tones: Storm and Black

Check out the combinations on our handy download chart. Once you’ve made your choice – you can order your free samples on our website.

Tip: Choose a range that blends with your walls for a seamless, contemporary result.

There you have it! Layering sheer curtains over your blockout roller blinds is the ultimate window covering solution. The combination offers you various privacy options for both day and night and the ultimate in light control too. It’s also super easy to achieve and won’t break the bank either. Especially when you use our Bali blends fabric range.
