When winter hits, staying warm and heating our homes is something we all like to do. Whether we have ducted heating, split systems or wood fires—keeping our homes and our families warm is of utmost importance during these chilly months. But heating our homes can be an expensive exercise, especially if we don’t have good insulation or the resources to ensure we are being as energy efficient as possible. So how do we keep your home energy costs down?
While there are many options for enhancing the warmth of your home, such as double-glazed windows and insulation, the perfect solution can be as simple as investing in some quality window furnishings. Plus, they are an attractive addition and add also value to your home. But how do these additions help to keep your energy costs down?
One of the primary benefits of window coverings is their ability to improve energy efficiency. In Australia, it is widely reported that up to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost, and up to 87% of its heat gained, through windows. It’s a scary thought, isn’t it? So unless you already have double glazing or some kind of insulating film on your windows, there will likely be a fair bit of heat transfer taking place through the glass. What this means is that plenty of the warmth within your home will be lost as it comes into contact with the chill of the outside via your windows.
Well-insulated window coverings, such as thermal or blockout curtains, double curtains, thermal blinds, blockout blinds or double roller blinds, can help prevent heat loss during winter, and heat gain during summer. By effectively controlling the transfer of heat through your windows, these coverings can reduce the load on your heating and cooling systems. Consequently, you can save on your energy bills by relying less on artificial heating or cooling. But remember, the efficacy of your window coverings will be gauged by how well they fit your windows. Custom-made window coverings will give you the best results, and we can help you with that. See our online how-to-measure guides and tips below for more information.
Window coverings also allow you to control the amount of sunlight entering your home. Direct sunlight can increase the temperature inside, which is ideal in the winter months as your heaters won’t have to work as hard to heat your home. By using coverings like blinds, shades, or curtains, you can adjust the amount of sunlight entering your rooms. This can prevent overheating in summer, and reduce the need for excessive heating in winter, ultimately saving on your energy costs.
Window coverings offer privacy by reducing the view from the outside in. This can eliminate the need for exterior window treatments or privacy films, saving you money. Additionally, coverings such as roller blinds or plantation shutters can act as an additional layer of security by preventing potential intruders from peering into your home and deterring them from attempting a break-in.
During the warmer months, UV rays from sunlight can cause fading and damage to your furniture, carpets, and other interior decor. Window coverings like roller blinds, plantation shutters or curtains with UV-blocking capabilities can help protect your furnishings from harmful rays, thereby extending their lifespan. By reducing the need for premature replacements or repairs, you can save money in the long run.
Some window coverings, such as heavy drapes or layered curtains, can provide additional insulation from the cold and help dampen external noises. Improved insulation helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature, reducing the workload on your heating systems and lowering energy expenses. Moreover, reducing noise infiltration can enhance your comfort, making it unnecessary to invest in soundproofing solutions.
Remember, choosing the right window coverings and utilising them effectively based on your climate and preferences can maximise their cost-saving benefits. So what options can iSeekBlinds offer you?
An option for customers who are looking for added insulation is to layer their window furnishings in their homes. For example, you may already have sheer curtains, but you might consider adding a blockout curtain or blockout roller blind for extra insulation. Doubling up on your window furnishings is great for insulation, as even a thin layer of fabric can enhance the insulating capacity within your home.
Sometimes trying to match the perfect blind and curtain fabric can be tricky. So, to make things easier, we have developed fabric combinations that complement each other. Not only do they provide you with a beautiful layered window covering solution, but one that is functional and affordable too.
When you are looking to enhance the insulating properties of your home, it helps to ensure that your curtains and blinds fit your windows well. Take measurements of your windows and ensure that you have got the size of your windows just right.

Feeling like your home needs a refresh? At this time of year, many of us start thinking about how we can make our spaces that little bit nicer (gosh, we are constantly thinking about that!) but we often overlook the effect that our window coverings have on the look and feel of a room.
Choosing the right treatment for your windows can make a world of difference. Not only do they change the visual appearance, but they can affect the way you live in the space as well.
Curtains and blinds are super popular right now, and the good news is that done right – they are a match made in heaven! Combining curtains and roller blinds offers you the ultimate in flexibility. Not only does it allow you to control light levels with ease, but they will also provide you the privacy and insulation benefits you require during the day and night.
So, think this is something you’d like for your home? Read on for our tips and tricks, and you too can master this perfect combination like a boss!
This is the common sense first-step as it will guide you in your decorating choices. For example – bedrooms need full blockout for a great sleep, especially important if you have a shift-worker in the house. Outside mounting your blockout roller blind and back rolling the fabric will enable the blind to sit nice and close to the architrave, eliminating any light gaps and offering the best blockout and room darkening result. Living rooms can be a little more flexible with light levels, so roller blinds can be inside mounted if you have the depth in your window reveals, giving you a more streamlined and subtle finish.
Will a blockout curtain and sunscreen roller blind be best? Or a blockout roller blind behind a sheer curtain? This can be a hard choice as both have practical and aesthetic benefits. Blockout curtains give you excellent light block – which is super handy if you have a shift-worker in the house who needs to sleep during the day – and installing a sunscreen blind behind the curtain will offer daytime privacy when the curtains are open. Conversely, if you can’t go past the beauty of sheer curtains, installing a blockout roller blind behind them will give you the privacy you need at night time.
Where and how you mount your curtains and blinds can really change the perception of the scale of your windows. If you have standard or low ceilings, you can elongate the height of the space by opting for a ceiling mount on your curtains and running the track past the edge of your architraves too. This will make your windows look much larger than they actually are. Going high and wide really will make a huge difference, we promise!
There are a few things to consider here in addition to the basic “Which colour?” question. Start with the roller blind and the room it’s going in.
Phew – confused yet?! Once you’ve covered these queries and have formed some idea of what you need from a fabric, then consider the look you want to achieve and the colours that will work with your interior.
We suggest choosing a roller blind fabric that is a tonal-match or neutral colour when placing them behind a sheer curtain. Considering the sheer is at the front and is the star in the “good-looks department”, you don’t want to detract from that by installing a roller behind it that is in total contrast or distracts you from its beauty. Choosing a neutral blind fabric that blends with your walls or with the curtain itself will give you a stunning result. When it comes to the sheer curtain fabric – our Bali range has some gorgeous colours to choose from and their linen appearance works with many different decorative styles looks amazing in any interior.
To make it really easy for you – we have some coordinated ranges of sheer curtain and blockout roller blind fabrics that will make your choices much easier! Take a look at the Bali and Linesque ranges on our website now.
Blockout and light-filter roller blinds are normally open during the day and closed at night. Blockout curtains are the same, whereas a sheer curtain is normally closed all the time. So the ability to easily open the rollers is of vital importance. Will you be happy reaching behind the curtain to operate your chain-drive blind? Or do you want to upgrade to luxury by opting for our motorised roller blinds? Imagine laying in bed or on the couch, and with a simple “Hey Siri, open the blinds”, up go the your rollers! Hmmm, very enticing isn’t it?
If you’re going for scale and size – ceiling-mount options are the way to go. Choose the profile that suits your needs best and consider the colour as well – our tracks are available in white, black and anodised silver. White will blend in with most ceilings, providing a super subtle look. Black will provide a great contrast, and is the perfect choice for those with black framed windows or other black accents in the room. The simple tip here is to decide whether you want the track to blend in or stand-out. You can also choose our motorised curtains for the ultimate in luxury.
So all in all – there a few things to keep in mind when selecting the right combination for your windows. The choices you make can make or break a room, so making sure you consider all aspects carefully is essential to achieving a great result, and one you’ll be super proud of for years to come.
If you’re in need of some inspiration, visit our gallery or Instagram page for ideas and real-life photos from our customers. Once you’ve decided which product you prefer, make use of our free fabric samples. They will allow you to see and feel the fabrics before selecting the one you like best.

When it comes time to install new curtains, the choices can seem overwhelming. Should you select a cheaper option to save money? How do you choose the fabric and style for each room?
Thankfully, curtain selection doesn’t have to be over-complicated. This guide is here to help make your choice a much easier one.
You don’t have to choose between cost and quality. At iSeekBlinds, we offer the best price on high quality, custom-made curtains that you can DIY install. We make it easy to shop for curtains in every room of the house.
The best place to start when selecting curtains is to decide what you need them to achieve. While curtains serve to add texture and style to any room, they also need to be practical!
For example, in living areas, you may want to achieve privacy during the day—this can be best achieved with sheer curtains. These lighter fabrics are beautiful and practical, plus our wide range of fabrics gives you the flexibility to design the room in your style. For evening privacy and insulation, look to add a blockout blind behind your sheers, or install blockout curtains as an alternative (effectively having double curtains).
In bedrooms, the main goal is usually blocking out light to allow you to get a better night’s sleep. Heavier, blockout drapes paired with sheer curtains may be more suitable.
There are a few different ways that you can hang curtains. You can choose to mount curtain tracks on the ceiling or the wall above the window architrave. Ceiling-mounted curtains will add the perception of height to the room.
You can also choose between standard curtain tracks and motorised tracks. You may choose to motorise the curtain tracks in bedrooms, allowing you to let the light in each morning without getting out of bed.
Our S-fold curtains are designed to fit our S-fold curtain tracks. This modern design creates less bulky ‘stacking’ of fabric when the curtains are open. You’ll have a better view from the window, with more natural light entering the room.
S-fold curtains hang gracefully in dynamic waves of fabric when closed. When s-fold curtains are open, the pattern and fabric colour is still visible, and the curtains frame the open window beautifully.
This step is key to curtains that will last and meet your aesthetic goals. At this step, consider the room’s purpose to decide what you need the curtains to achieve.
Blockout fabrics are heavy to midweight, will block the light completely and are great for darkening rooms and providing nighttime privacy.
Sheer fabrics are lighter in weight, gently filter the natural light and provide daytime privacy, making them ideal for any room of the home.
You can order free fabric samples from our website so that you can make an informed decision for your home.
Another consideration is the insulating properties of the fabric. Reducing heat transfer at windows can help to maintain the indoor temperature and contribute to reducing power costs.
Blockout fabrics either have an blockout coating or separate lining, and therefore have the highest insulation properties. Layering blockout curtains with sheers can help to keep a room warm in winter or cool in summer.
The curtain fabric you choose needs to suit your lifestyle. If you have a young family or pets, you might opt for more durable curtain fabric for areas of high traffic and use.
Choosing curtains that are easy to clean makes the annual spring clean faster. Delicate or high-maintenance fabrics can be kept for a formal dining room, formal lounge or master bedroom.
Finally, it’s important to remember that curtain fabric should protect you from UV rays from the sun when inside your home. Choosing natural fabric designed for the Australian climate, with flame retardant properties, will contribute to keeping those inside the home healthy and safe. You can learn more about our fabrics here.
While curtain colour selection is a personal preference, there are some guidelines you can follow.
If your windows are a standard size, off-the-shelf curtains may be suitable. That said, if there’s a particular aesthetic you want to achieve, having your curtains custom made means that you can order curtains made to fir your windows and select the fabric, too. This will give you the best result, ensuring your curtains fit your windows perfectly!
With custom made curtains, you can choose the drop style, length and mounting style to achieve the look that you want for every room. Plus, you can install custom made curtains yourself with plenty of support and advice from our friendly team.
If you’re in need of some inspiration, visit our gallery or Instagram page for ideas and real-life photos from our customers. Once you’ve decided which product you prefer, make use of our free fabric samples. They will allow you to see and feel the fabrics before selecting the one you like best.

Sheer curtains are an investment that provides softness and elegance by diffusing natural light. The lightweight fabric allows light to enter the room while protecting your privacy during the daytime.
Pairing sheer curtains with heavier drapes can add a romantic feel to a room. Blackout drapes also make it easy to darken any room, as needed. Whether you choose opulent drapes or modern blackout curtains, the addition of sheer curtains can elevate any room.
Perfect your home with sheer curtains from iSeekBlinds. When you choose your fabric and mounting option, we will send your custom-made curtains ready for DIY installation.
Combining sheer curtains with thicker drapes helps to insulate a room. Multiple layers of fabric create air pockets that trap warm or cool air. Layering curtains will help to keep your room cooler in summer and warmer in winter, so you get more benefit from your heating and cooling systems.
Layering sheer curtains with blackout curtains or drapes will ensure that the room stays private when you open the drapes to allow sunlight through. Our double curtain track makes it easy to layer these two styles of curtains together.
When you know the right steps, hanging sheer curtains behind drapes is easy.
Before you can hang your curtains, you need to choose the style, measure the window, and ensure that the sheer fabric highlights the room in an advantageous way.
Sheer curtains from iSeekBlinds come with a minimum of 200% fullness and s-fold hanging style. The curtains are custom-made to fit your window with the tracks included, so you are ready to install them right away.
Sheer curtains are usually closed throughout the day when drapes are pulled open, so it is the sheer curtains you will be looking at most of the time.
TIP: Sheer curtains are the most visible curtains, so choose a fabric style that complements your decor and colour scheme.
Drapes (blockout curtains) are usually thick fabric, often lined to add an extra layer of light blocking and insulation. Drapes should generally run along on a separate row of curtain tracks to sheer curtains. Using a second curtain track allows enough space for the sheer curtains to hang between the drapes and the window.
When choosing the fabric, consider which colours match best with your sheer curtains. For inspiration, you can browse our photo gallery. Pick out the curtain styles that you like best before ordering your curtains.
You can mount sheer curtains and drapes directly onto the wall above the window or the ceiling. It will depend on the style of window treatment that you want to achieve.
When layering curtains, both layers will be mounted in the same way, with space to allow each layer to open and close independently.
At iSeekBlinds, you can order double curtains which come supplied with a double curtain track, to make measuring and installing your double curtains easy.
Our recommended mounting style is ceiling mounting your double curtain tracks. Our double S-fold tracks give curtains an elegant drop that will set high-quality fabrics to advantage in any lighting.
Our curtains and curtain tracks come with detailed instructions on how to install them, but we also have handy how-to videos to show you how to install your curtains. Brackets should be spaced around 600mm apart to ensure the curtain rail is attached securely to the wall or ceiling.
TIP: Lighter curtains can have brackets spaced a little further apart, whilst heavier curtains will need brackets spaced closer together.
If you are a visual learner or want more guidance, I show you how to install your sheer curtains and drapes in this handy video.
You can frame your window space elegantly with a classic vintage style using ties to hold back drapes. Instead of opening the curtains fully along the curtain rail, this allows the fabric to drape around the window to form a styled frame.
It’s easy to install ties. Here’s a quick guide:
Sheer curtains have traditionally been placed closer to the window, with heavier drapes closer to the living spaces. However, to maintain the softness of sheer curtains once the drapes are closed, you may place sheer curtains in front of the drapes. This arrangement may help thick fabric curtains to keep the room warmer as well.
It all depends on the sheer fabric chosen for your curtains and the style you prefer. Before arranging sheer curtains in front of heavier drapes, make sure that the lighter cloth looks good when placed over the heavier curtain fabric. You can do this during the planning phase when you order your free fabric samples from us.
After some time, curtains and drapes need cleaning. Regular cleaning ensures they stay in good condition for longer, adding value to your home. Cleaning of curtain fabric is straightforward, depending on your chosen fabric type. Our article ‘How to clean sheer curtains‘ explains in detail how to clean your sheer curtains to keep them looking fresh.
If you’re in need of some inspiration, visit our gallery or Instagram page for ideas and real-life photos from our customers. Once you’ve decided which product you prefer, make use of our free fabric samples. They will allow you to see and feel the fabrics before selecting the one you like best.

Many people go shopping for curtains without much thought of how their curtains will need to be hung.
It’s important to know that the type of curtains you choose influences whether you’ll need curtain tracks to suspend them. Depending on the style of the curtain and the choice of fabric, curtain tracks may provide you with much needed function and design versatility.
Highly decorative, practical, and capable of suspending heavy drapes or pleated curtains, tracks allow for greater flexibility and ease when it comes to upgrading your window.
Here, we will explain what curtain tracks are and why you might need them.
iSeekBlinds provides custom-made curtain tracks with all our custom-made curtains to make DIY curtain installation easy
Curtain tracks permit drapes to be drawn using a tracking mechanism. Unlike curtain rods – which is simply a pole fed through curtain rings – curtain tracks use an internal tracking system with clip-on gliders to attach the curtain and feed it through when opening and closing. This tracking system is completely hidden from view and can operate cordless, corded, or motorised curtains.
Tracks can be mounted to walls and ceilings as well as behind decorative fixtures such as a valance or pelmet. This allows for greater flexibility in achieving different design goals or accommodating different window sizes.
Available in plastic or metal finishes, curtain tracks are adaptable to any type of room or interior design and give a more modern-looking aesthetic
Tracks are primarily used to hang and draw curtains that have heading tape. For this reason, you can’t use tab top or eyelet curtains with a tracking system, as these styles must be hung by a pole or rod.
The type of curtains that do require or benefit from curtain tracks include:
When choosing your curtain style, you need to be mindful of the type of tracking you need. There are different types available depending on the size of your window, the weight and style of your curtain, and whether you want to layer sheers behind your curtains.
If you want your curtains to make a statement – and not your curtain hardware – then curtain tracks are a perfect choice. Curtain tracks keep your window hardware invisible, putting the attention on the curtains themselves.
The main benefits of using curtain tracks, aside from its minimalist profile, include:
Since most curtain rods are made of two pieces to facilitate a longer window, they often leave a bump or a seam where curtains can get stuck. With curtain tracks, drawing drapes is smooth and seamless and can be easily opened or closed along the entire length of the window without getting caught.
Curtain tracks are supported with brackets and other hardware mounted to a wall or ceiling, allowing for greater durability. Because of this, long and heavy fabrics or drapery can be supported without the tracks ever bending or collapsing under weight (something you might get with curtain rods).
Curtain tracks provide much-needed versatility and flexibility, especially when dealing with windows of irregular shapes such as bay or corner windows. They can also be used for other drapery purposes, such as for use as a room divider or as a door.
Curtain tracks can be easily bent to shape and are a great choice for DIY decorators as they allow curtains to be hung and configured any way desired.
When you purchase new curtains from iSeekBlinds, we provide you with custom curtain tracks made specifically for you. You can design them to suit any size window or room configuration, including corner windows and wide window/door combinations.
When ordering your curtains from iSeekBlinds, simply enter in the width of your overall track, select how it will be mounted (wall or ceiling), choose your curtain track style and colour, and select your opening type and wand size. We will take it from there.
There are a variety of different installation methods for curtain tracks. We make the process easy by giving you step-by-step videos to help you install your tracks at home.
If you’re in need of some inspiration, visit our gallery or Instagram page for ideas and real-life photos from our customers. Once you’ve decided which product you prefer, make use of our free fabric samples. They will allow you to see and feel the fabrics before selecting the one you like best.

Installing your own custom made curtains will give you the flexibility to choose the exact result and achieve the ambience you desire for every room in your home. Plus, it’s one of the easiest ways to give any room a fresh look and feel!
Adding sheer curtains provides privacy during the daytime and gives a sense of softness to your bedrooms and living areas. Sheer curtains add elegance and soft touches to rooms where you might use roller blinds at night time.
If you are looking for options to block out the cold of winter, then blackout curtains or thick fabrics are suitable. Blackout curtains are also ideal for shift workers or anyone needing to rest in darkness during daylight hours.
Want to give your home grace with the right set of curtains? iSeekBlinds have a range of curtain fabrics and custom-made curtains you can hang with a perfect fit.
You can either source your own fabric and sew your own curtain, or better still, order your custom-made curtains from us and install them yourself — it all depends on your DIY confidence!
Once you’ve selected the fabric for the curtains, you’re ready to measure your window space. Using these measurements, you will calculate the final curtain size.
Whether you are installing sheer curtains, blackout curtains or thick curtains to darken a room, you can take the measurements yourself to ensure that you get the result you desire.
Grab a tape measure to get started! The steps below can guide you, or you can watch our How to Measure videos on our website here, or on our YouTube channel for specific instructions on our Australian-made, custom curtains.
If you’re sewing your own curtains, the width of the curtains will be determined by:
Generally speaking, fuller curtains will be more luxurious and suit most living areas. For kids’ bedrooms, you might use a less full curtain.
If sewing yourself, it’s better to get more fabric than you think you’ll need than to end up with inadequate curtains, so err on the side of generosity if you are unsure. For a fuller curtain, the fabric width you’ll need is 2.5 times the finished curtain width. For a less full curtain, it’s 1.5 times the finished curtain width.
An S-fold curtain style is the most common style for both sheer and blackout curtains and the one that we make here at iSeekBlinds.
For narrower windows, a single panel of fabric will cover the window. Broader windows may benefit from curtains with multiple panels. Panels allow the curtains to open for access to the window.
Curtains don’t have to open at the centre of the window. An asymmetric split may suit the window better.
Make sure that you include the split position in your curtain measurements when you place an order.
When sewing your own curtains, the total curtain fabric length depends on whether you intend to hem the curtain, how large the hem will be, and the drop effect.
The curtain drop effect describes how the curtain interacts surface below, usually the floor or window sill. There are three common drop styles:
When measuring the curtain height, you must include the distance to the top of the curtain track. Measure from the top of the curtain track or rail to the place where the curtains will finish.
When measuring curtains for a new or renovated home, ensure the floor coverings are in place before measuring the curtain drop.
For curtains that hang within the window frame, allow about 10mm for the finished length above the windowsill. Remember to allow enough fabric length to hem the curtains if that is the final look you want.
Curtains that hang below the window but don’t reach the floor will generally fall about 100mm below the base of the window.
TIP: Mounting the curtain track above the window space creates a sense of height and adds an expansive feel to any room
When hanging adjacent curtain panels — for broad windows in particular — you’ll want any pattern on the fabric to align between each fabric section.
To ensure alignment of the pattern in each curtain, you will need to know the pattern height. If you are buying the fabric online, the pattern height should be in the fabric product information.
Ensure that the total height of the curtain fabric is a multiple of the pattern height. To do this, round up your curtain height measurement to a multiple of the pattern height.
You won’t need this step if you are mounting curtains with a plain fabric.
If you’re in need of some inspiration, visit our gallery or Instagram page for ideas and real-life photos from our customers. Once you’ve decided which product you prefer, make use of our free fabric samples. They will allow you to see and feel the fabrics before selecting the one you like best.

If you’ve recently redecorated or you’re just craving a refresh, installing new curtains is one of the best ways to bring life and light into a room.
Whether you want to refresh a bedroom or living space, updating your curtains is a task you can do all by yourself. To get you started with planning, here are some top ideas on how to update curtains. These seven thought-starters can inspire you to create the window treatment that best suits your home and lifestyle.
Ready to update your curtains? iSeekBlinds make it easy with custom-made Australian curtains that are simple to install. Measure your windows and place an order to receive curtains that are ready to install.
In the cooler months, you’ll likely want to enjoy the natural light that comes through your windows. Sheer curtains can add a touch of elegance and privacy whilst allowing natural light to fill each room.
Sheer curtains come in a range of fabrics and styles. Layering sheers with your blinds or thicker curtains helps to enhance the energy efficiency of a room. Sheer curtains will add softness by diffusing natural light.
Sheer curtains can be paired with your existing roller blinds or blockout curtains. You can measure your windows and order custom-manufactured sheer curtains from iSeekBlinds that are ready for DIY installation. Check out our handy DIY guides here.
Roller blinds are a space-saving alternative to heavy block-out curtains. If you’ve got old, heavy curtains that intrude into the room and collect dust, replacing these with roller blinds can create a modern, allergy-free window treatment.
Installing roller blinds in newly built or established homes has many benefits. The blinds are easy to maintain and will sit flush against the window. In Australia, roller blinds are also an effective way to keep out the heat on a scorching summer day.
Roller blinds can block the light or act as a filter for harmful UV rays, reducing the intensity of the mid-summer sun while allowing natural light to enter your home.
You can install roller blinds yourself using our DIY guides. There are roller blinds made for inside or outside of the window, so you can choose the option that best suits you.
When choosing fabric for your roller blinds, your health is important, too. All of our fabrics provide sun protection without releasing harmful chemicals when the sun hits the roller blinds each day.
Blockout curtains are perfect for bedrooms or formal living areas, where you want to keep warmth in and provide a comforting aura.
One key advantage of using blockout curtains is that they improve the energy efficiency of your home. Thick, lined curtains also absorb sound, so your environment is more peaceful.
Choose a fabric to match your decor and mount blockout curtains from the ceiling or wall, according to what best suits the room.
What is more luxurious than waking up and saying ‘Hey Alexa, open the blinds’? Curtains and blinds alike can be motorised so that you can enjoy the morning sun without even getting up.
To automate your curtains, they must have motorised tracks. You can upgrade your existing roller blinds to motorised blinds with our easy retrofit process, or you can order motorised blinds when ordering new curtains or blinds.
When you think of sheer curtains, you may think of your Grandma’s white lace curtains. But sheer curtains come in contemporary styles, too. Playing with colour is one way to bring a modern look to any room.
Light-coloured sheers are perfect for small rooms. When mounted from the ceiling, sheer curtains will add a sense of expansiveness to any space. For larger rooms like an open plan living space, dark sheers can make a striking statement.
Dark sheers hung with an S-fold style are elegant and contemporary. You can browse our gallery for inspiration on how to bring this modern look into your home.
As your lifestyle changes, the style of curtains that best suits your home may evolve. If you have pets or young children, curtains or blinds made from durable fabrics that extend to the window ledge are more suitable. At this stage of your life, it makes sense to take a practical approach to window treatment with styles that serve their purpose and don’t intrude.
In a room designed just for adults, exploring delicate fabrics and floor-length curtains can bring elegance. Updating curtains as your life changes is one way to celebrate the evolution of your life over time. It’s all about making a space that’s perfectly suited for you and your family to enjoy.
Before committing to a change, you can start the planning process by ordering free fabric samples so you can see and feel the different available fabric options
Ceiling mounted curtains are a modern window treatment that increases the visual perspective of any room. Sheer curtains or block out curtains can be ceiling mounted to enhance the sense of space within a room. This modern look is achievable for anyone.
Updating your curtains may seem like a daunting task, but the results will be worth it. And just because you’re doing it yourself doesn’t mean you have to go it alone.
If you’re in need of some inspiration, visit our gallery or Instagram page for ideas and real-life photos from our customers. Once you’ve decided which product you prefer, make use of our free fabric samples. They will allow you to see and feel the fabrics before selecting the one you like best.
So, if you’ve got a home that could benefit from a refresh, let us help you! The DIY process is easy to follow, and it will make a world of difference to your home, we promise.

In this post, I’m going to show you how you can use layers of curtains, to add softness and luxury to any home. Whether you love the vintage style of lace curtains and heavy drapes or prefer a striking modern look, there many curtain layering combinations to consider.
Dark sheers over blackout curtains are one modern style that you may have seen trending on Instagram. Another popular style is layering neutral fabrics for a bohemian vibe. To inspire you, here are some of the creative ways you can combine sheer and blackout curtains.
Whatever your style, you can find the fabrics and advice to achieve the look you want with iSeekBlinds custom made curtains.
Placing sheer curtains close to the window glass and blackout curtains towards the inside of the room allows for privacy during daylight and darker hours.
During the daytime, opening blackout curtains will allow natural light to flow into the room. Sheer curtains can remain closed as these transparent fabrics allow light to enter, softening the harsh sunlight in the summer months. In the cooler months, you may open sheer curtains to allow maximum light to fill the room.
In the evening, you can maintain privacy and warmth by closing the blackout curtains.
Sheer curtains and blockout curtains can be hung as single or multiple panels. Two panels create traditional centre-opening curtains, multiple panels can be free-floating and move along the track to where you want them to sit, whereas one single curtain will gather on one side when open.
Blockout curtains can help improve sleep, but you may prefer the visual softness of sheer curtains facing the inside of a room. This modern curtain layering style is perfect when you want a contemporary twist on a traditional window treatment. This is also the favoured option of the iSeekBlinds team as it allows our beautiful sheer curtain fabrics to really shine!
Bringing sheer curtains to the inside is an elegant way to soften any room’s decor. S-fold sheer curtains can be allowed to hang to the floor, or you may drape curtains back with ties for a more theatrical and romantic effect.
Mounting curtains from the ceiling adds a sense of height to the room while enhancing elegance with smooth visual lines. Ceiling-mounted curtains can open on the left, right, and centre, or be free-floating, to suit your room and style.
If you want both curtain layers to move freely and independently, mounting S-fold curtains on separate tracks is most effective. Our curtain tracks have a small profile that blends seamlessly with the ceiling, hiding the brackets for an elegant finish.
Wall-mounted curtains are attached to the wall directly above the window. Different bracket lengths ensure that sheer curtains and blackout curtains can both move freely.
Wall-mounted curtains often have a centre opening, but you could also use a left-hand or right-hand stack, or free-floating curtains, to suit the layout of the room you are decorating.
For added modernisation, you can choose motorised curtain tracks. Motorised curtain tracks allow the curtains to be opened at a distance, even when you are still in bed.
This style of curtain track is ideal for blackout curtains. Imagine being able to set a timer so that the curtains open automatically, allowing light into the room for a natural awakening — no alarm necessary!
You may choose to mount both curtain layers on motorised tracks or mount sheer curtains on hand-operated tracks and blackout curtains on motorised rails
Before ordering sheer and blackout curtains for layering, you will need to plan the curtain length. The total length of the curtain is known as the ‘drop’. The drop is the length of the curtain from the curtain tracks at the top to the floor.
When layering sheer curtains with heavier drapes, the lighter fabric can fall slightly shorter than the heavier fabric to maintain movement. For example, if your sheer curtains are measured to hover just above the floor, your blackout curtains might lightly touch the flooring.
Sheer curtains mounted over blackout curtains will look elegant with a longer length. While blackout curtains might hover or barely touch the floor, sheers facing into the room may break gently to provide a sense of luxury.
Ultimately the choice is yours – you can make them the same drop, or one longer, it’s totally up to you — with custom-made curtains, you can achieve the exact look you are after.
You can find instructions on exactly how to measure for sheer and blackout curtains, and our founder Mike has prepared video demonstrations for each step to guide you on your DIY journey!
